On 10 August, William Bol Bol Nygundeng holds up his mobile phone, which shows his photograph, as tweeted by UNICEF South Sudan the previous day. He is a displaced person currently living in the Tomping Protection of Civilians site, on the base of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Juba, the capital. “I was excited to see my photograph on Twitter,” he said. “I didn’t know it was going to be there. Most evenings, I read my Twitter feed and keep up-to-date with various organizations and the news they post. I keep my cell phone screen dimmed so that it doesn’t take too much of the battery as it costs money here to charge a phone.” Speaking about how he came to live in the camp, he explained: “I had finished my last year of school in Uganda and had returned home for two weeks when the fighting broke out in Juba, and we got caught up in the war.” He sneaked out to see Tomping, where he heard many people were fleeing. He then returned home and fled, on foot, along with approximately 20 members of his extended family, back to the camp. “I fled with only the clothes I was wearing,” he said. “But it’s okay when you don’t have a lot of clothes in the camp; you just wash your shirt and put it back on again.” In February, he was able to return to his family’s home in Juba and found that it had been looted; nothing of value remained. William has been able to buy two more shirts recently with money he saved while working with an NGO in the camp. He is the sole breadwinner for many children in his extended family, as well as for his uncle and brother. He also supports his brother’s wife and child, who are of a different ethnicity and live outside Juba. In early August 2014 in South Sudan, 1.1 million people have been displaced since resurgent conflict erupted in mid-December 2013. An estimated 588,222 of the displaced are children. Some 434,000 people have also sought refuge in neighbouring countries. UNICEF has ap
